On our 10-day itinerary through Scotland we did not hesitate for a moment to include the Isle of Skye , which is surely the most popular island in the Highlands and in the whole country. What we also say is that we regret having dedicated less time to it than it deserved: we spent a whole day there and we think it deserves at least one and a half, if not two.

What to see on the Isle of Skye, Scotland
Size matters. We hadn't thought about it before and thought that the Isle of Skye was much smaller, but it is the second largest in Scotland . It is the same size as the third Spanish island: Fuerteventura – Skye is 1,656 km² and Fuerteventura 1,660 km². So it is not surprising that there is a lot to see in Skye and that, depending on the time you have, you will have to choose. Don't worry, here is a first selection: the most important places to visit in Skye .
Portree
Portree , the capital of the Isle of Skye , is actually a small fishing village with just over 2,000 inhabitants. But just to see the port and its colourful little houses, it is worth a stop. A stop that can also be a “technical” one: to sleep, eat, shop in supermarkets, fill up with petrol… We loved the typical pub dinner at The Isles Inn .

The Quiraing
The landscapes on the island are so brutal that it is difficult to rank them, but we have a favourite among all the places to see in Skye : the Quiraing . This mountain range rises on the same peninsula where Portree is located, the Trotternish peninsula . Those views all the way to the sea, those rocky pinnacles, those shades of green... Everything is special. The map shows you where to park. There begins a 6.5 km hiking route, about three/four hours. Even if you don't want to do the whole thing, the views are already impressive from the start.
